My boss and his wife hosted a wonderful party last night for people in his lab, collaborators, and administrative personnel. The conversation turned to science songs, and one guest, knowing my fondness for song parodies, suggested that I write some sort of Joe Jackson take-off.
“Gosh, I’m not that familiar with Joe Jackson,” I admitted. “To me, Joe Jackson basically means ‘Is She Really Going Out With Him?’ and ‘Steppin’ Out’.”
“Yeah, ‘Is She Really Going Out With Him?’ is a great song,” the guest enthused.
“Well….” I said thoughtfully. I looked around, and the density of medically oriented partygoers put me in mind of oozing wounds. “I suppose I could do something like ‘Is That Really Coming Out of Him?'”
Yeah, kind of gross. But that crowd might actually appreciate a song like that.

The only Joe Jackson I know of was “Shoeless.” Maybe the two could be referenced in a song, “Is That Really Coming Out of Him? Say It Ain’t So, Joe.” Subtitled: “But Why Else Would His Sox Be Turning Black.”
